To pimp or not to pimp, that is the question.
In all of this Indie Author debut strategy it seems like some are starting to over pimp the proverbial news feeds. There has to be a better solution to advertising and getting your name out there. Can we just share the teasers with the readers without asking something for them in return? I believe that as an author or blogger, your work speaks for itself and what you put into it - you should get out of it. When did bribery become popular? Prizes are wonderful, but prizes for the exchange of services to you as the author seems wrong. I feel that helping another author out by asking for your own fan base to go check out their page is acceptable because that's great team work.
I don't necessarily despise all of the free advertising that Facebook and Twitter allow because I want to have my stuff exposed to all that it can be as much as the next guy (or girl) but I don't feel the need to have every other post be about needing to get so many more likes in order to share a teaser or contest. New Authors, there are several successful past Indie Authors who debuted on Facebook and Twitter without having to pimp themselves out. They appear to post information that helps them get the followers they need without having to ask.
I am not trying to make enemies with this post. I'm just being honest. I hope that when you read this, you take it for what it's worth and that is just the simple honesty that there are better ways to get your name out there and get your book exposed to the masses.

I much prefer simple ways like leaving a comment, answering a question etc. I love to " pimp " my favorite authors, but sometimes people are just trying to win a book! I hope that made sense... Did in my head....lol
Thanks for stopping by as always Pat - I totally agree. It's too saturated now and it gets overwhelming at times.
DeleteYou are not alone in this. I'm a review blog owner and now a published author. There is such a thing as over promotion and when an author over promotes, I don't have them in my news feed anymore. I don't un-friend them, just don't get the notifications anymore.
ReplyDeletePlus, I don't participate in groups that do the like me, friend me, tweet me stuff either. That crap gets on my nerves.
Did my debut do well? No it didn't but also didn't over promote and promise the world either.

Yes, I too am struggling to gain a following but I feel as though my "work" should eventually speak for itself. I will post ever now and then just to remind my new friends that I have a page and that I hope they follow me. If they do, great - if they don't, that's okay too. :)
