Talania - A trip down memory lane

Excerpt

Past:
“Hi, I’m Evelyn.” She sticks her beautiful tanned hand out to shake mine. I am dumbfounded, at a loss for words. I mean, I just hit this girl in the head with a volleyball and she is being polite.
“Um, sorry about the volleyball. I’m Tristan.” I shake her hand in return and the air around us crackles and pops. I pull my hand back quickly. What the hell was that?
“Well, Tristan, next time try not hitting a girl in the head with the volleyball when you’re ogling her.” My mouth drops open. I am busted.
“I…I…I’m sorry.” I mean, what the fuck else is there to say?
“It’s all right.” She laughs and it is such a beautiful laugh.
“So how old are you Tristan? You look like you’re around seventeen.” She cocks her head to stare back at me.
“I’m…I’m fifteen,” I stammer out. What in the hell is wrong with me?
“Well, you look older. I’m fourteen. It was nice meeting you Tristan.” She points to a beach house.“That’s where I’m staying if you ever want to visit.”With that, she walks away, her beautiful long chocolate brown hair waving in the wind.

Present:
I glance down, pulling her hand to me. The air crackles and pops at the first touch of her skin against mine. It’s as if I can breathe again. Four years of air rush into my lungs at once, overwhelming me. I look closely at the symbol on the bracelet. I can’t breathe. This cannot be what I think it is. Tears are stinging my fucking eyes. This cannot be happening.
“This…this is a cancer survivor bracelet,” I whisper.
I look up into Ev's beautiful chestnut eyes and she nods, releasing my grip and lifting her hair as she tilts her head. Three long scars hide underneath her hair.
“Brain cancer. I had a tumor, and it came back three times. I can’t remember the years from when I was fourteen up until nineteen,” she whispers, letting her hair fall back down.
Drake and I gasp at the same time. This whole time I thought she left me, left us, and she was fucking dying of cancer. I cannot breathe. Someone needs to get me some fucking air. I eye the tequila, hesitating before I start downing it straight from the bottle. After I am satisfied, I let the bottle slip from my lips.

Review:

I heard all the "buzz" about this book floating all around Facebook, so I did what every great reader and reviewer does and obtained a copy of this book.  I'm so glad I did.

Wreck Me had me captivated from the Prologue.  I've read so many books lately that just have me going through "the motions" that I was hoping for a book that could really grab me and hold onto me the whole way through.  Wreck Me is that book.

The character development is strong and the love that grows between the hero and heroine is so amazing (I can't use this word enough) that my heart ached at times.  I fell in love with Jo and how she overcame her struggles from her youth, but Damon - oh Damon how I love him.  He's a great Alpha male who does everything in his power to take care of Jo and make sure that her life is everything she could ever want it to be.

The riveting twists towards the end of this book had me staying up late because I couldn't put the book down.  This book took me over the edge and gave me a swift kick in the ass (but in a good - no scratch that, in a great way).  I can't wait for Restore Me and the next part of this couple's journey.

Well done J.L. Mac!!  I'm captivated by Damon and Jo.

Book Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

"Pagan's Paradise" is book Two of the Double Trouble in Paradise series
This eBook contains two novels

Read Musing Maddie's review of novel one here.

How are the sex scenes?
Sensual, but not explicit.
“In a titillating tangle of arms and legs and writhing bodies, he moved in her and over her as he explored the mysteries of her moans and cries…”

How are the story lines?
Interesting and engrossing.

Would you read it again?
Maybe.

Back of the Book

In PAGAN'S PARADISE another ex-pat, this time putting his tuxedo to good use, is doing his best to keep a revolution from occurring. Jack Stratford has a plan that appears to be working until Joanna McCall shows up. She insists she's not leaving the country until her photography project for a children's charity is complete. Jack knows she's in danger and does what he must to keep her safe and, hopefully, send her home. Like that's going to happen! With a crusty jungle guide and a wacky Elvis impersonator why would anyone want to leave?

Review

In Part 2 of Susan Connell’s Double Trouble in Paradise, Pagan’s Paradise, we follow the story of recently introduced swanky heart-throb, Jack Stratford. Cocky, confident, seductive and sexy Jack! Ms Connell sure knows how to write them!

Having recently flown into San Rafael from the US, innocent but talented portrait photographer, Joanna McCall, was determined to fulfill her responsibilities to charity group Lemon Aid, and capture the plight of the many innocent children suffering from poverty. She also wanted an adventure. When she first focused on ‘hold-your-breath-handsome’ Jack Stratford through her camera’s lens, she was transfixed by his intense, pale blue eyed stare; his aura of self-assurance. But she had a job to do, and was determined not to be distracted. Until, fate brought them together. She didn’t expect his attraction, certain he only saw her as a ‘generic man-protect-woman’ case. She knew he harbored deep secrets and was reluctant to open his heart. (but, at least he shared his prized stash of peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches and soda – that’s got to count for something!)

Jack had a secret he was forced to hide. In San Rafael for work, he was also attempting to mend a betrayed, broken heart. Joanna was like a breath of fresh air to his stale existence. All things about her captured his heart. Her humor, her courage, energy and beauty, both inside and out, were all facets that enraptured him. After only a brief time, he was surprised that he’d become so attached to her ‘vital feminine force’. However, he wanted her out of San Rafael to protect her from the advancing political storm. Could he risk telling her the truth? Could they survive the truth?

Susan Connell knows her craft. Romantic Comedy is her strength. She writes beautifully, describing scenery sufficiently, without largess of words. With both finesse and eloquence, she creates tension with satisfying resolutions, and with clever, witty dialogue, her characters are funny and mischievous.
“Are you drunk?” she asked, knowing the question would set their teasing banter in motion.”
“Would you take advantage of me if I were?” he asked, looking her up and down in a way that made her feel naked.”
She can also write passion!
“Like a master working his brush on fresh canvas, he created fantasies in her consciousness that had her squirming to have them fulfilled.” “She took his breath away; from sweet seductress to willing lover, she was every woman he ever wanted…Provocative, passionate and more determined to please him than he ever dreamed.”

I love her delicious, drool-worthy Heros!

The thing I enjoy most about her books is her humor, (she gives new meaning to getting down and dirty!) and the fact that each book elicits a blissful sigh at its conclusion! So, if you are in need of a fun, romantic romp, with a lick of suspense, pick up Double Trouble in Paradise.

Sweet and sensual.
“As he entered her, the petal-smooth centre of her body closed around him in a profusion of snug contractions. Glorying in her feminine rite of possession, he rolled to his other side, taking her with him…..This was their place in paradise.”

How are the story lines?
The multiple storylines are woven together well and engrossing.

Would you read it again?

Back of the Book

TROUBLE IN PARADISE features Reilly Anderson, a hotel owner (or is he?) on the edge of the rain forest, who must deal with a beautiful, determined guest wanting information Reilly can't give her. Allison Richards is not the type to give up so Reilly does what he must...even if it means playing an updated variation of Tarzan. Throw in a breast obsessed monkey, a village kid with attitude and let's get this party started! Near the end of this romantic comedy you'll meet the hero of the second book.

Review

In book one of this wonderful duo, Trouble in Paradise, Susan Connell once again delights her readers with her richly humorous and heartfelt stories, sure to entertain and engross.

What would you expect would result between a lackadaisical, gorgeous, bare-chested Alpha male relaxing in a hammock in a Central American rainforest, and a suit clad, uptight Mortgage Advisor, on a mission to find her missing brother in law? From this author - Fun! Mischief! Simmering sexual tension!

Reilly Anderson was a man ostensibly unfazed by the crazy world in which he lived. He had a wicked sense of humor, and believed, upon meeting the assertive Allison Richards, that it was his job to de-stress her (or at times, distress her….or even de-dress her!) and quickly send her packing on the next plane back to the US.  She was unknowingly, in danger of destroying a vital, top-secret project, one month from completion. But, if he thought he could get this beautiful woman, whose confidence was able to bore 'into him with enough feminine energy to blitz every masculine circuit in his six-foot-two-inch frame' to retreat from her quest, he was sorely mistaken.

Allison Richard's life had been ordered, functional and safe. She was fiercely loyal, intelligent and passionate with a dry and snarky wit. She had thought she was simply on a mission to find her brother-in-law, last heard of in Reilly’s hotel. She thought her mission would be handled quickly and efficiently, returning her to the real world within days. That is, until she met the devilishly handsome and sexy Reilly Anderson. Her long neglected libido was quick to stand up and scream for this man.

Similarly, Reilly's desire was enflamed by this fearless and stunning woman. But he was hiding a secret. Would this secret destroy their fledgling fantasy-like romance? More importantly…..could she play Jane to his Tarzan??

Written eloquently in third person with rich dialogue and humor, the reader gained insight into each character’s thoughts and motivations. The mischievous shenanigans of the pet monkey, Puddin’Head, as well as the quirky antics of fellow hotel guests, kept serious moments light. With two passionate characters in Reilly and Allison, sexual tension was high. You will enjoy watching those flames catch fire!

When you need a sweet romance mixed with a dash of mystery; a sexy, hot Hero and spirited, witty heroine, grab yourself a Susan Connell book. She provides picturesque scenery to soak in, colorful supporting characters who delight, and comical stories to enchant. Double Trouble in Paradise will engage you if you need fun, naughty and nice!

Back of the Book

Caroline Reynolds has a fantastic new apartment in San Francisco, a KitchenAid mixer, and no O (and we're not talking Oprah here, folks). She has a flourishing design career, an office overlooking the bay, a killer zucchini bread recipe, and no O. She has Clive (the best cat ever), great friends, a great rack, and no O.

Adding insult to O-less, since her move, she has an oversexed neighbor with the loudest late-night wallbanging she's ever heard. Each moan, spank, and-was that a meow?-punctuates the fact that not only is she losing sleep, she still has, yep, you guessed it, no O.

Enter Simon Parker. When the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. Their late-night hallway encounter has, well, mixed results. Ahem. With walls this thin, the tension's gonna be thick...

Review

Wallbanger by Alice Clayton is a deliciously fun, memorable Contemporary Romance set in San Francisco. With her trademark mix of silly and steamy, it was an engaging, feel-good novel with sparky, lovable characters, strutting pussy cats, wonderful descriptive prose, and loads of laughs.

Our heroine, Caroline Reynolds is a funny, intelligent, confident woman and a very talented interior designer - not decorator! She surrounds herself with her two equally crazy best friends Mimi and Sophia, has a wonderful job and lives with her mischievous cat, Clive. As she moves into her new apartment, she discovered that her neighbor was a bit of a cad with noisy nocturnal activities!  The majority of the story is heard from her point of view, which includes her humorous inner debates between Brain, Backbone, Heart, Nerves and Lower Caroline, with the constant update on 'The Return of O', her missing Orgasm. This kept me both entertained and frequently giggling.

With Caroline’s tendency to provide monikers for those she met, her self described status as “hot and sexy”, and shamelessly naughty humor, (my favorite kind of girl!!) it is no wonder the devilishly handsome neighbor, Simon Parker could not resist her.

Simon is of course, the perfect specimen of male – tall, drop dead sexy gorgeous, piercing blue eyes, complete with an arrogant smirk guaranteed to charm and woo. Their first encounter with each other with Simon clad only in a sheet, and Caroline in what created her nickname of “Nighty girl”, was so exasperatingly funny, that you knew you were about to embark on an entertaining ride!

Simon, a successful Photographer, had been carefully hiding from love. He had witnessed in his parents’ marriage, natural, open affection, complete without false fanfare and wistfully recalled that they "...used to hold hands all the time. Not for show." His constant travels allowed him to remain un-tethered, but Caroline's open, warm and truly accepting nature finally cracked open his long-held clasp of singleness, offering him a face to call ‘home’.

In many ways, that's the love Simon had held out for. His 'harem' was temporary, safe, fun. Caroline was not looking for a boyfriend, feeling contentedly single, and was particularly determined to avoid the man seemingly unable to sustain monogamy. It was fun to read their comical journey into friendship through their ‘truce’, as they both waged internal wars determined to resist each other, despite the flirtation and taunting.

There is spark, intensity, innuendo, sexual tension and snarky banter from the start, and as the story progressed, so did their antagonism and despite best intentions, their interest.

Needless to say, resistance was eventually futile. Initially their journey of each other wasn't lustful and frenzied. (Well, not completely!!)  Caroline felt 'worshiped' by Simon. "With sweet kisses and soft touches, he began the process of getting to know my body, and it was exactly what I needed." Whilst in that ‘aahh moment’, Caroline then describes them as "Flaily and My Snorey Pants." Funny!

But when they finally had completed exploring gently, well.... the lust freely ran through their bodies 'like a freight train'. You will not be disappointed!

What makes their friendship/relationship believable however, is the genuine care and easy comfort with each other. Beyond the joking and fun, something special is forming.

Alice Clayton is extremely talented. Her ability to create beautiful, romantic moments, interspersed with splashes of unexpected humor, is brilliant. Caroline and Simon's banter is quick-witted, snappy, spiced with innuendo and downright hilarious. The supporting characters are given the perfect amount of airtime and storyline, and her stunning description of Spain, (and, cough, Simon), causes you to feel as though you are there, luxuriating with Caroline as she explores and enjoys and gazes at the shirtless ‘oozing sex’ Simon.

Wallbanger is the most refreshing romance I have read all year. The author takes her time exploring Caroline and Simon. From their initial zing of attraction/exasperation to continuous, feisty banter and from a little heartbreak to soulful and sensual love-making - it's clear why this couple became fabulous and true friends. The book leaves you feeling satiated. A MUST read book!

On Dublin Street, #1 of the On Dublin Street Series (by Samantha Young)

Book Release Date:  October 12, 2012
On Dublin Street rating:  5 out of 5 Stars
On Dublin Street series rating:  N/A  (haven't read them all)

"On Dublin Street" is book one in the On Dublin Street series

How are the sex scenes?
The sex scenes are smoking hot, steamy and well worth the wait!

How are the story lines?
With such a well constructed and believable story with multiple sub-stories,
On Dublin Street was a terrific book to read.
It was fun, sad, saucy and refreshing.

Would you read it again?
Yes!!!

Summary

Joss Butler, the twenty two year old heroine of the story, is an accomplished, intelligent and aspiring author masking an aloof and lonely fourteen year old girl. To say she has deep emotional issues is a gross understatement. To say that she has suffered devastating loss is as well. In the first chapter we learn that she lost her parents and her adored younger sister in a horrible car accident. When we next meet her, it is eight years hence and she is living in Scotland’s beautiful city of Edinburgh, having kept herself emotionally isolated from the world. She describes herself as ‘cool and self possessed’.

Enter arrogantly handsome and cocky Braden Carmichael. Their first meeting is one so electrically charged, that they are both equally shocked (excuse the pun!). Braden is smart, savvy and sinfully sexy. Similar to Joss, apart from his best friend Adam and his step-family, he has kept people at arms length. Until he meets Joss, or Jocelyn as he called her. Their tidy, uncomplicated lives were about to change.

Review

In some ways, On Dublin Street by Samantha Young has a fairly predictable plot. Boy meets girl, boy chases girl, gets girl, loses girl and fights for girl! With clever writing, a slow discharge of Joss and Braden’s painful pasts, wonderfully likeable characters, and cleverly timed humor - the story is refreshingly unpredictable.

Braden is a man who not only knows what he wants, but he tenaciously pursues his desired conquest. He wants Jocelyn in his bed and in his heart. For Joss, whose walls for many years were impenetrable and who was determined to keep her distance from the luscious businessman with his ‘caveman’ antics, this poses a problem. The sexual tension is strung tight until he made his first claim of her lips. This not until Chapter 10.

In his first kiss we read:
“Braden’s hand tightened around my neck and he groaned, the vibration of it surging through me, skimming down my body like hands teasing my nipples, whispering across my belly and sliding home between my legs.” Phew !
As Joss described Braden, rolling her eyes, “Why the hell did he have to be the human version of a sexually charged nuclear weapon?” Why indeed.

What ensues, it not just a sexy love story, although, yes it certainly was that too. It is the breaking down of walls to allow love in; the deconstruction of coping mechanisms that had allows both Braden and Joss to exist as isolated islands in life. What Braden sees as inevitable, Joss sees as impossible. Yet, they are drawn to one another as a moth to the proverbial flame.

The sex scenes were very intense and hot!
“I raised my hips and Braden slammed back into me. I cried out, my neck arching. He groaned against my ear as he thrust hard, our bodies so focused on reaching climax..." Yum

Samantha Young’s dry wit and humour is delightful, her timing, brilliant. One of the characters, Rhian, struggled with relating to people she couldn't stir.

As Joss stated, “Rhian, we’ve talked about this. Normal people don’t like to be called names. For some reason, they tend to take that personally. And you are a tad bitchy, by the way." To which Rhian replied, “Normal people are so sensitive."

The interchanges between Braden and Joss ae clever and funny. After a brief mention of blowjobs, unintentionally in front of the waiter whilst ordering dinner at a classy restaurant, Braden says,
“I’ll have the steak, medium-rare.” He smiled softly at me. “What are you having?" He took a swig of water. He thought he as so cool and funny. “Apparently sausage.”
Some books allow you to close the cover when you’ve finished reading and think ‘next’. This is not one of those books. I thoroughly recommend On Dublin Street for readers who enjoy hot spicy sex, deep thoughtful relationships mixed in with good humor and sensitivity. It’s packed with many laugh out loud moments as well as poignant and sad times too.
