Deep Autumn Heat, #1 of the Star Harbor series (by Elisabeth Barrett)

Release Date:  July 9, 2012
Autumn Heat rating:  3.5 out of 5 stars
Star Harbor series rating:  N/A (haven't read them all)

"Deep Autumn Heat" is book one of the Star Harbor series

How are the sex scenes?
Warm at best, not particularly sizzling, but nicely written.

How are the story lines?
The story lines are still developing.
They were interesting, and fairly predictable.
There will be another three stories to come, so I presume we will learn more about the other characters’ stories worlds then.

Would you read it again?
Probably not.

Back of the Book

In this sexy new Star Harbor romance series, featuring the too-tempting Grayson brothers, a celebrity chef turns up the heat for a local cafĂ© owner—and things start to sizzle.

Lexie Meyers decides there’s nothing sweeter than watching Sebastian Grayson’s perfect, wicked mouth devour her coconut cake. He’s hot, he’s hungry, and he’s sizing her up like she’s the best thing on the menu. But she’s been burned in the past and flings just aren’t her thing. Too bad Sebastian can’t resist a challenge.

Worldly, famous, and notorious with the ladies, Seb had planned a weekend of fishing and relaxation with his brothers. Until Lexie, with her kissable lips and frosty “get lost” attitude, makes him want to forget his culinary empire and create some magic with her. After he fires up his charm—including challenging her to a televised cook-off to break through her resistance—it’s now hotter in the bedroom than it is in the kitchen and Lexie isn’t sure whether she’s lost her mind . . . or just her heart.

Review

Deep Autumn Heat by Elisabeth Barrett is her debut contemporary romance set in a picturesque, sleepy fishing village in New England.  It is the first book in her Star Harbor series, which revolves around four, dangerously gorgeous brothers, and their journey towards love.

Our first sexy heartthrob brother is Sebastian Grayson; handsome, arrogant and renowned Master Chef. Amongst his brothers he is just Seb, one of the Grayson ‘bad boys’ when young. In many ways, he has the world at his feet with his hugely successful career almost justifying his borderline obnoxious behaviour. Yet, he has not completely embraced his true potential, and is largely directed by his entourage of ‘staff’, rather than showing initiative. Tall, powerfully built, bright green eyes, and devilishly seductive, women have always fallen at his feet, (among other places I suspect!) until he meets Lexie.

Fabulous fire-cracker, Lexie Meyers; our heroine with spunk, wit and kindness in abundance. She is the owner of her own restaurant LM Kitchen, and has a heart filled with warmth and generosity, despite being been badly damaged in the past. Emotionally scarred, she is understandably guarded and careful around men. As Sebastian enters and creates havoc in her ordered world, maintaining her tight hold on resistance to his well-perfected charms became increasingly difficult. He is known as a womanizer  but, as happens in romance novels, he ‘finally meets’ the one woman who can challenge his solo outlook on life, a woman he craves and wants to possess.

The sparky repartee between the two Chefs was wonderful. It was delightful and frequently funny to see Seb put in his place by the feisty Lexie. They also challenged each other to overcome vulnerabilities, to move forward from their ‘safe’ worlds, to take chances, on life and in love.

With their common love of creating food and owning their own restaurants, it was believable that Seb and Lexie’s culinary passion would overflow into their physical passion. Their love-making is written beautifully, with a scarce amount of detail.
They made love slowly, content to let the slide of their bodies do the work this time….
After several long minutes of his slide and release, Lexie was growing frantic. She abandoned the kissing and her head tossed from side to side….
He groaned into her neck, and then stroked faster and faster, harder and harder, crushing her into the mattress as he pumped his body into hers. Lexie gasped with relief. She thrust her hips against him equally hard, lifting them off the bed with her desire”
“She was ready. More than ready. In one swift movement, he spread her folds and sank into her waiting depths”
Books starring siblings always attract me. I love to see how family dynamics are captured, especially when it’s brothers. These boys are all drop dead gorgeous, of course, but also very emotionally intelligent – an extremely rare (and a tad unbelievable) quality in men.

As is often the case with the first book in a series, time taken to lay future books’ foundations, can often be at the expense of the novel’s story. Deep Autumn Heat was a delicious, easy read. Despite trying to create tension with a few nefarious sub-plots, it was light, predictable, and not particularly challenging. However, I’m confident this will only get better, the more Elisabeth Barrett writes. I am looking forward to reading the next installment, Blaze of Winter, which will be the story of Theo, Seb’s twin.

Naked, #1 of The Blackstone Affair Trilogy (by Raine Miller)

Book release date: 16 September 2012
Naked rating:  4 out of 5 stars
The Blackstone Affair Trilogy rating:  4 out of 5 stars

"Naked" is book one of The Blackstone Affair Trilogy
read Musing Maddie's review of book two, All In

How are the sex scenes?
Hot  - thank you very much!

How are the story lines?
The storylines are well thought out, and compelling.
There is definitely more to be told as the second and I suspect, third books come out.

Would you read it again?
Yes.

Back of the Book

Brynne Bennett is living the good life. An American art student at the University of London and part-time photographic model, she’s putting her life back on track with school and lots of hard work. When ultra successful London businessman Ethan Blackstone buys her nude portrait, he isn’t taking ‘no’ for an answer. He wants Brynne in his bed and has no trouble voicing his desires either. His dominant nature captivates and ensnares despite the demons she carries inside her. But there are secrets in this relationship. Huge ones. Can Ethan free Brynne from the past that has marked her? Will Brynne let him or will the specters tormenting her resurface to destroy their chance at a future…

"That picture changed everything. I was not the same after I saw it and I couldn't go back to the man I'd been before seeing it either. Not after we met that night on the street. My whole world altered because of a photograph. A photograph of my beautiful American girl." -Ethan Blackstone

Review

Naked is the first in the trilogy The Blackstone Affair by Author Raine Miller. It is set in London 2012, in the lead up to the Olympic Games. It's primarily a fiery and sexy romance between the beautiful American Art Conservancy student Brynne Bennett and the gorgeous Ex Special Forces hottie, Ethan Blackstone.

From the outset, the reader is aware that Ethan knows secrets about Brynne and sought her out as opposed to 'accidentally' meeting her at her friend's Photography Exhibition. So, naturally, you are anticipating some form of predictable confrontation. This is handled beautifully keeping the tension tight until a wicked, somewhat expected cliff-hanger at the book’s conclusion.

Ethan Blackstone, 'the guy who oozed hotness', is the edgy, commanding and sexy Hero who makes a fast track to seduce and dominate the intelligent, sweet yet emotionally scarred Brynne Bennett. Despite her initial reticence, and her desire to flee Ethan, she is drawn to his intensity, his intoxicating scent and his kindness. Their instant rapport and sexual dance is believable, their witty repartee, brilliant, and their intensely physical relationship, passionate and hot. They are both enamored with each other almost instantly.

As is common in Romance novels, Ethan is the kind of man who takes care of his woman. Her first. Every time.  Sigh.
“Totally spread before him, he stared down at my sex for the second time tonight…And then he put his mouth on me. That soft tongue rolled over my clit and my folds and caressed. I could feel his goatee prickling the sensitive flesh as I writhed against his lips and tongue.”
“Ethan loomed over me, the head of his penis tipped inside me already, burning hot and hard as bone. His hips forced me wider as he sank his cock down deep and true. He took my mouth, thrusting his tongue simultaneous in movement with his intrusion below.”
“I squeezed my pussy around his pummeling cock while he worked me hard. He made all kinds of sounds and whispered dirty talk about how good it felt to fuck me. It just made me wilder.”
There are some very funny interchanges between the characters, which keep you giggling. Benny, Brynne's eccentric, talented British photographer and good friend, provided the initial snort with this comment, "How's that make you feel, Brynne luv? Some rich toff pulling his pud to the sight of your unearthly beauty." I loved it. Very dry British humor to a T!! The humor is well placed, keeping what could be an intense book, light.

There are many unresolved issues in the book, cleverly unattended so you eagerly await the sequel. Well done, Raine Miller, on an entertaining, emotionally charged and highly sensual book. I loved Ethan and Brynne, flaws and all and look forward to reading (and reviewing) the next book All In.

Enchanting Ella: I am a 1-Click Addict

My Name is Enchanting Ella, and I am a 1-click addict.

I'm in several book groups on Facebook.  Earlier this week there were many discussions on how many great books have released within the last 2 months.  This has apparently made me a 1-click addict.  $0.99 here and $1.99 there....before I knew it I had over 25 new books within 2 weeks.

I also have been taking advantage of the free books available for download.   These have been made available by the author's who are trying to promote upcoming books or get their names out there.  Made my reading list grow by miles.  I'm now roughly 30-35 books behind.   Thankfully I do not have a spouse to get upset with me for my bad spending habits.

I, however, am far from alone.  At least 30-40 other ladies mentioned having the same issues as myself. Phew, I'd hate to be alone in this addiction.  Books are such a great escape.  I wish I had more hours in the day to read.  My job sort of gets in the way.  But, without the job - I wouldn't be able to mouse over that good 'ol 1-click and get what I want as often as I want.  So I feel blessed to have that job that doesn't allow me to read for 9 hours of my awake time.

Do you suffer from the same 1-click addiction?  How often do you find yourself ordering new releases or books each week?  Do you have a book budget?

On Dublin Street, #1 of the On Dublin Street Series (by Samantha Young)

Book Release Date:  October 12, 2012
On Dublin Street rating:  5 out of 5 Stars
On Dublin Street series rating:  N/A  (haven't read them all)

"On Dublin Street" is book one in the On Dublin Street series

How are the sex scenes?
The sex scenes are smoking hot, steamy and well worth the wait!

How are the story lines?
With such a well constructed and believable story with multiple sub-stories,
On Dublin Street was a terrific book to read.
It was fun, sad, saucy and refreshing.

Would you read it again?
Yes!!!

Summary

Joss Butler, the twenty two year old heroine of the story, is an accomplished, intelligent and aspiring author masking an aloof and lonely fourteen year old girl. To say she has deep emotional issues is a gross understatement. To say that she has suffered devastating loss is as well. In the first chapter we learn that she lost her parents and her adored younger sister in a horrible car accident. When we next meet her, it is eight years hence and she is living in Scotland’s beautiful city of Edinburgh, having kept herself emotionally isolated from the world. She describes herself as ‘cool and self possessed’.

Enter arrogantly handsome and cocky Braden Carmichael. Their first meeting is one so electrically charged, that they are both equally shocked (excuse the pun!). Braden is smart, savvy and sinfully sexy. Similar to Joss, apart from his best friend Adam and his step-family, he has kept people at arms length. Until he meets Joss, or Jocelyn as he called her. Their tidy, uncomplicated lives were about to change.

Review

In some ways, On Dublin Street by Samantha Young has a fairly predictable plot. Boy meets girl, boy chases girl, gets girl, loses girl and fights for girl! With clever writing, a slow discharge of Joss and Braden’s painful pasts, wonderfully likeable characters, and cleverly timed humor - the story is refreshingly unpredictable.

Braden is a man who not only knows what he wants, but he tenaciously pursues his desired conquest. He wants Jocelyn in his bed and in his heart. For Joss, whose walls for many years were impenetrable and who was determined to keep her distance from the luscious businessman with his ‘caveman’ antics, this poses a problem. The sexual tension is strung tight until he made his first claim of her lips. This not until Chapter 10.

In his first kiss we read:
“Braden’s hand tightened around my neck and he groaned, the vibration of it surging through me, skimming down my body like hands teasing my nipples, whispering across my belly and sliding home between my legs.” Phew !
As Joss described Braden, rolling her eyes, “Why the hell did he have to be the human version of a sexually charged nuclear weapon?” Why indeed.

What ensues, it not just a sexy love story, although, yes it certainly was that too. It is the breaking down of walls to allow love in; the deconstruction of coping mechanisms that had allows both Braden and Joss to exist as isolated islands in life. What Braden sees as inevitable, Joss sees as impossible. Yet, they are drawn to one another as a moth to the proverbial flame.

The sex scenes were very intense and hot!
“I raised my hips and Braden slammed back into me. I cried out, my neck arching. He groaned against my ear as he thrust hard, our bodies so focused on reaching climax..." Yum

Samantha Young’s dry wit and humour is delightful, her timing, brilliant. One of the characters, Rhian, struggled with relating to people she couldn't stir.

As Joss stated, “Rhian, we’ve talked about this. Normal people don’t like to be called names. For some reason, they tend to take that personally. And you are a tad bitchy, by the way." To which Rhian replied, “Normal people are so sensitive."

The interchanges between Braden and Joss ae clever and funny. After a brief mention of blowjobs, unintentionally in front of the waiter whilst ordering dinner at a classy restaurant, Braden says,
“I’ll have the steak, medium-rare.” He smiled softly at me. “What are you having?" He took a swig of water. He thought he as so cool and funny. “Apparently sausage.”
Some books allow you to close the cover when you’ve finished reading and think ‘next’. This is not one of those books. I thoroughly recommend On Dublin Street for readers who enjoy hot spicy sex, deep thoughtful relationships mixed in with good humor and sensitivity. It’s packed with many laugh out loud moments as well as poignant and sad times too.

"Operation: Endgame" is book one of the When the Mission Ends series
See Maddie's review of book two, Operation: Endeavor

How are the sex scenes?
The sex scenes were salacious, descriptive and I wanted more!

How are the story lines?
Interesting, fast paced and mostly believable.

Would you read it again?
Yes.

Back of the Book

It’s been six months.

Six months since Jake Madsen let Chris Robertson die.

Six months since the passion between Jake and Cassie, Chris’ sister, stepped over the line.

But now Cassie’s being stalked and it’s time for Jake to swallow his guilt, grief, and lust so he can save her life, even if it’s a life without him. He owes it to his dead friend and he owes it to Cassie. Can he overcome these challenges to be a part of his best friend’s life?

Review

Operation: Endgame by debut author Christi Snow is the first book in a Contemporary Romantic Suspense Trilogy, set in Lubbock, Texas. All three books feature former active duty Air Force officers and the women they love. This is an excellent opener to what should be a fabulous series.

Establishing character credibility and history adeptly is always a plus in a series. Christi Snow accomplishes this brilliantly, shifting through time, allowing the reader to become familiar with Colton, and Cassie and Chris Robertson, who from an early age were orphaned. Endgame primarily focuses on Cassie (twin of Fighter Pilot Chris) enduring her brother's tragic death and her traumatic experience with a crazed stalker. We also met the supporting characters: Jake, the hunky best friend of Cassie and Chris; the vivacious, highly intelligent Penelope; and sweet, serious Julie.

You can't but love a heroine who is intelligent, beautiful, sassy and fiercely independent! Cassie, a Military Professor is someone used to control. She maintains a full, busy life determined to keep her fears at bay for her ‘boys’, all involved in active duty. Due to her proficiency as a Military Strategist, she draws the attention of a nefarious stalker, hell bent on making her his. Cassie grew up knowing she was loved and cared for by her men, but one man in particular held her heart, and had for a long time.

Honorable, luscious and delectable Jake Madsen had been friends with the twins for 20 years. With grief constricting their hearts on the night of the funeral, and dormant passion stirring, a night of sex realized a fantasy for Cassie, and caused Jake to become assuaged with guilt, risking their easy friendship.

Jake is extremely likeable. He is sexy, gorgeous, courageous and a wonderfully tactile man. He also needs to overcome many obstacles to restore peace to his mind. Admirably moral, almost to his detriment, his life has come to a crossroads in both his career as a Pararescue Jumper (PJ) and his relationship with Cassie. He knew he loved her, but until her life was at risk, had not acknowledged the true depth of his feelings. Was it lust, love or guilt motivating his actions?

As a couple, Jake and Cassie are very believable. Having been friends for such a long time, their familiarity made for easy lovers. When passion took hold, it was delicious.
“He softly worked the petals of her core and felt her falter as she stroked him. Slowly he inserted one finger, then two into her….He lowered himself to his knees in front of her and slowly inched her sides of her dress up her hips until he could see the tops of her garter and the matching bright red lace thong that made his mouth water……He grasped her clit between his tongue and his lip and sucked.” Just a sneak peek…
Endgame is what I would call a light suspense. There are twists and turns, which keep you guessing; funny interchanges; and enough sizzling chemistry to keep you panting. It read like a Television mini series with all the characters, wicked and virtuous, being introduced and the perpetrator easily identifiable. Despite being a little predictable, the pace is good, the characters strong - each adding significant dimension to the book, and the action/suspense is arresting. The author balances the intensity between the mystery and the romance effortlessly. I feel there could have been more probing into the dreams Cassie experienced, and a less conspicuous villain, but otherwise, it was an engaging, promising start to an excellent series. Just wait till you read the second book Operation: Endeavor

Opposites Attract (by Angela Britnell)

Amazon ~ B&N

Opposites Attract Rating:  4 out of 5 stars
Release Date:  January 13, 2012

How are the sex scenes?
Romantic, sweet and swoon worthy

How are the story lines?
Interesting and intriguing with lots of angst

Would you read it again?
I might

Summary:

Why can no one believe Holly and Brett are content with their single lives? Certainly not their interfering parents who decide to take action. The 'Opposites Attract' dating agency has the theory if normal matchmaking hasn't worked they'll turn it upside down. The uptight British policewoman and the laid-back Southern writer are complete opposites and so make the perfect mismatch. A weekend in Paris turns magical but secrets, lies and sheer stubbornness threaten this romance before it hardly gets off the ground. This pair will fight love all the way and it's a question of who'll give in first.

Review

Refreshing.  Opposites Attract by Angela Britnell is an enjoyable Contemporary Romance.  Plenty of angst and damaged characters were a big part of this book.  It also contains lots of lovely bantering back and forth between hero and heroine.

Holly Brightstone is a strongly independent woman from outside of London.  She is a police investigator who gets put into a dating site’s pool of singles unknowingly and unwillingly by her mother, Elaine.  Holly is all career, all the time.  She rarely makes time to date or meet prospective suitors.

Brett Adair is a laid back and casual southern writer who is content with his career being first, or so he thinks.  He’s also set up to be part of Opposites Attract dating agencie’s next single male candidate by his own father Dean.  Dean has recently lost his wife, Brett’s mother to illness and is also alone.  Dean wants to see his son happy and in love.

Both hero and heroine are equally but differently damaged, stubborn, and as a result extremely isolated from deep relationships other than with their parents.
The weekend trip to Paris courtesy of the dating agency lands Holly and Brett along with each parent Elaine and Dean, in some precarious situations.  Eventually, Elaine and Dean find a slow burning attraction amidst all the hot and cold angst of Holly and Dean.  The storyline ebbs and flows with plenty of romance and intrigue.  The suspense that was included in the romance was a nice addition to keep me interested.

I loved the banter between the hero and heroine and feel that the character development was very thorough.  Elaine and Dean’s additional love affair was adorable and added so much to the story.  I enjoyed this book tremendously.

Blog Tour: Author Interview with Kimberly Knight

Where I Need To Be
Release Date:  December 15, 2012

"Where I Need To Be" is book one of the B&S Trilogy

Comment below to win a copy of Where I Need To Be

Question 1.  Introduce yourself to those who might not be familiar with who you are i.e. - where are you from and what are your likes / dislikes in life?

I write under the pen name Kimberly Knight. I have lived in the Bay Area in California for about six years with my husband and spoiled cat, Precious. Before my life consumed of writing and reading romance and erotic novels, I was addicted to reality tv and dramas.
I also enjoy playing co-ed slow pitch softball in a few local leagues and playing computer games like World of Warcraft and online poker. I love my San Francisco Giants and San Jose Sharks. If they are on TV, I am watching them. I try to go to a few games each during a season.

Question 2.  Let’s talk about what inspired you to begin a writing career.  Was it a specific book or author or did you always have the writing spirit buried deep within?

I 100% did not have the writing spirit buried deep within. A year ago, if you would have told me that I would be a new author and have written my first book, I would have laughed in your face. I was never a reader. I read the Twilight Saga and then years later, the Hunger Game Trilogy. I maybe read two of the Women's Murder Club books by James Patterson that I needed to read in the series within those years but reading was not fun or my priority.

It wasn't until April of this year that I decided to read Fifty Shades of Grey because I heard Ian Sommerhalder on the radio talking about that he was in talks to play Christian. I was like "well this could be awesome", you know since he is so HOTT. So anyway, I bought the trilogy, read it in a week (which was a complete 180 for me) and then I was having withdrawals and read it again. My husband thought I was crazy. Since then I have read over 60 books (which is huge for me). My friend and I were talking one day and were like "we should write a book." We were half joking. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to see if I could and well, I guess I did, lol. So to make a LONG story short, it wasn't a specific book or author but FSOG sparked my fire for sure!

Question 3.  Where did your book, "Where I Need To Be" originate from?  Was it a story that you started from one incident or how was it conceived inside your head?

So like I mentioned above, my friend and I were talking and joking that we should write a book. We actually started brainstorming but she was too busy with school that she told me to write it. When I started writing, I didn't stick to our original story. I knew I wanted to use "boy" names for my main girls because I love the name Spencer for a girl. I actually texted my friend one day when I was at the gym that I was running next to a hot guy on the treadmill. One thing lead to the other and my story just formed. I knew how I wanted it to start just by that text and I knew how I wanted book one to end. Everything else came as I wrote. I wrote the part about their first fight just to write it and one day I was walking down the street and out of no where I knew how I was going to link that fight with the ending. I was smiling like an idiot walking down the street so proud of my self and actually amazed at how everything was coming together.

Question 4.  Do you have someone specific in your life that is your idol or muse?

Actually I don't have one idol or one muse. Everyone has a special place in my life. If I take the time to get to know you, that shows I care for you deeply. Even if we have never met in person. I cherish everyone that I share my life with, even all my online friends. You know, of course my family is a huge part of my life and I wouldn't be who I am today without them but I can't just name one or two or even three people I look up to. Everyone just has a little piece of me, even if they don't realize it.

Question 5.  What is your favorite genre to read and do you have any specific books that are your favorite/s?
If you would have asked me this question in March, I would said Crime Mysteries like the Women Murder Club books but after FSOG, that stuff is boring to me! I gotta have my romance and erotica novels now! Bared to You is my number one favorite and I can really list a ton of books. I don't want to call out bad books but that list is much shorter!

Question 6.  Spencer seems like a typical female character, a little shy and fun loving.  Did you model her after anyone specific?
I actually wouldn't say she is a typical female character. I have read so many books that the girls always go running or cry a river when shit hits the fan. In Where I Need to Be, shit hits the fan and I think Spencer handled it like a normal female. Of course since I wrote the book, Spencer has some of my characteristics but she also has some of my friends and so does Ryan. The characters are a mixture of people in my life.

Question 7.  "Where I Need To Be" has some HOT love scenes, did you find them difficult to write or did they flow freely from your imagination?
I know what I like to read so I tried to write that. It was hard to write some of the scenes. Actually it's funny, the very first two I ever wrote where the dance scene and then what happens in the car and those flowed. Everything after was difficult for me. I actually had to skip a few and just continue with the story because I was having writers block. I wrote three scenes back to back when I finally knew what I wanted to write and um...that was fun...turned myself on ;)

Question 8.  "Where I Need To Be" is the first Novella in this series.  Can you tell our readers how many books they can expect?
So far I have only planned to write three. If they are a success I am not opposed to writing more. I actually really hate when an author is so successful but won't continue the story...hint hint Twilight, FSOG, Bared to You...

Question 9.  As an Indie Author, do you have any advice for those wanting to break into the Literary world on their own?
If you have a story in mind, write it. I started to write just to see if I could. It wasn't my plan to ever publish Where I Need to Be but a few people read it as I was writing it and told me they really liked it. It got me thinking that maybe this could actually work. I currently have ten more book ideas floating in my head! So just write, you never know what will happen until you just do it! Also, get an editor. I learned so much during the editing process.

Question 10.  Lastly, is there anything else you’d like your readers to know about this book or about yourself?

Yes, I actually prefer to be called Kimberly and not Kim :)
