Walking Disaster, #2 in the Beautiful Series (by Jamie McGuire)

Book Release Date: April 2, 2013
Book Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Series Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Walking Disaster is book 2 in the Beautiful series

How are the sex scenes?
Believable and real.

How are the story lines?
Thought provoking, intense but hopeful.

Would you read it again?
Undoubtedly yes!

Back of the Book

Finally, the highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster.

Can you love someone too much?

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. But just when he thinks he is invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Beautiful Disaster, Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes.

Review

Walking Disaster by talented author Jamie McGuire was absolutely agonizing--but in an undeniably moody yet loveable Travis Maddox way!!

If you have read, correction, adored Beautiful Disaster, you will be familiar with the frustratingly back-and-forth love affair between ostensibly, cocky Travis and the modest, emotionally scarred Abby. Many perplexing questions regarding his behavior, and his odd idiosyncrasies, were resolved as the story gave voice to this complex, intelligent, fiercely loyal and loving man's plight to follow his late mother's advice -
"One of these days you're going to fall in love, son. Don't settle for just anyone. Choose the girl that doesn't come easy; the one you have to fight for, and then never stop fighting."
This early quote gave great understanding to the mind of Travis. The thing to remember as you read both books though, is that these are stories about kids. They run from challenges, they hide from conflict, and they make mistakes. However, it was a wonderful, heart-wrenching story showcasing Travis' internal battles and his protective nature, as he endeavored to live according to this sage advice.

Walking Disaster was perfectly paced, providing specific focus on Travis' account to further understand him, or the event, with less detail when not necessary to keep the story moving. Her characters have such intensity, depth and color that it was impossible to resist their allure. Splashes of humor provided relief from the agonizing tension at just the right time.

Epilogues! I love Epilogues! As I am a confessed greedy reader, I still wanted more. However, this Epilogue offered the closure for both Travis and Abby, the gaining of contentment within themselves both individually and as a couple. Maturity, peace and a deep-rooted love, amid the guaranteed challenges this sparky pair will always generate. Jamie McGuire--thank you! Thank you! I. Loved. It.

Review:

I heard all the "buzz" about this book floating all around Facebook, so I did what every great reader and reviewer does and obtained a copy of this book.  I'm so glad I did.

Wreck Me had me captivated from the Prologue.  I've read so many books lately that just have me going through "the motions" that I was hoping for a book that could really grab me and hold onto me the whole way through.  Wreck Me is that book.

The character development is strong and the love that grows between the hero and heroine is so amazing (I can't use this word enough) that my heart ached at times.  I fell in love with Jo and how she overcame her struggles from her youth, but Damon - oh Damon how I love him.  He's a great Alpha male who does everything in his power to take care of Jo and make sure that her life is everything she could ever want it to be.

The riveting twists towards the end of this book had me staying up late because I couldn't put the book down.  This book took me over the edge and gave me a swift kick in the ass (but in a good - no scratch that, in a great way).  I can't wait for Restore Me and the next part of this couple's journey.

Well done J.L. Mac!!  I'm captivated by Damon and Jo.

Deep Autumn Heat, #1 of the Star Harbor series (by Elisabeth Barrett)

Release Date:  July 9, 2012
Autumn Heat rating:  3.5 out of 5 stars
Star Harbor series rating:  N/A (haven't read them all)

"Deep Autumn Heat" is book one of the Star Harbor series

How are the sex scenes?
Warm at best, not particularly sizzling, but nicely written.

How are the story lines?
The story lines are still developing.
They were interesting, and fairly predictable.
There will be another three stories to come, so I presume we will learn more about the other characters’ stories worlds then.

Would you read it again?
Probably not.

Back of the Book

In this sexy new Star Harbor romance series, featuring the too-tempting Grayson brothers, a celebrity chef turns up the heat for a local cafĂ© owner—and things start to sizzle.

Lexie Meyers decides there’s nothing sweeter than watching Sebastian Grayson’s perfect, wicked mouth devour her coconut cake. He’s hot, he’s hungry, and he’s sizing her up like she’s the best thing on the menu. But she’s been burned in the past and flings just aren’t her thing. Too bad Sebastian can’t resist a challenge.

Worldly, famous, and notorious with the ladies, Seb had planned a weekend of fishing and relaxation with his brothers. Until Lexie, with her kissable lips and frosty “get lost” attitude, makes him want to forget his culinary empire and create some magic with her. After he fires up his charm—including challenging her to a televised cook-off to break through her resistance—it’s now hotter in the bedroom than it is in the kitchen and Lexie isn’t sure whether she’s lost her mind . . . or just her heart.

Review

Deep Autumn Heat by Elisabeth Barrett is her debut contemporary romance set in a picturesque, sleepy fishing village in New England.  It is the first book in her Star Harbor series, which revolves around four, dangerously gorgeous brothers, and their journey towards love.

Our first sexy heartthrob brother is Sebastian Grayson; handsome, arrogant and renowned Master Chef. Amongst his brothers he is just Seb, one of the Grayson ‘bad boys’ when young. In many ways, he has the world at his feet with his hugely successful career almost justifying his borderline obnoxious behaviour. Yet, he has not completely embraced his true potential, and is largely directed by his entourage of ‘staff’, rather than showing initiative. Tall, powerfully built, bright green eyes, and devilishly seductive, women have always fallen at his feet, (among other places I suspect!) until he meets Lexie.

Fabulous fire-cracker, Lexie Meyers; our heroine with spunk, wit and kindness in abundance. She is the owner of her own restaurant LM Kitchen, and has a heart filled with warmth and generosity, despite being been badly damaged in the past. Emotionally scarred, she is understandably guarded and careful around men. As Sebastian enters and creates havoc in her ordered world, maintaining her tight hold on resistance to his well-perfected charms became increasingly difficult. He is known as a womanizer  but, as happens in romance novels, he ‘finally meets’ the one woman who can challenge his solo outlook on life, a woman he craves and wants to possess.

The sparky repartee between the two Chefs was wonderful. It was delightful and frequently funny to see Seb put in his place by the feisty Lexie. They also challenged each other to overcome vulnerabilities, to move forward from their ‘safe’ worlds, to take chances, on life and in love.

With their common love of creating food and owning their own restaurants, it was believable that Seb and Lexie’s culinary passion would overflow into their physical passion. Their love-making is written beautifully, with a scarce amount of detail.
They made love slowly, content to let the slide of their bodies do the work this time….
After several long minutes of his slide and release, Lexie was growing frantic. She abandoned the kissing and her head tossed from side to side….
He groaned into her neck, and then stroked faster and faster, harder and harder, crushing her into the mattress as he pumped his body into hers. Lexie gasped with relief. She thrust her hips against him equally hard, lifting them off the bed with her desire”
“She was ready. More than ready. In one swift movement, he spread her folds and sank into her waiting depths”
Books starring siblings always attract me. I love to see how family dynamics are captured, especially when it’s brothers. These boys are all drop dead gorgeous, of course, but also very emotionally intelligent – an extremely rare (and a tad unbelievable) quality in men.

As is often the case with the first book in a series, time taken to lay future books’ foundations, can often be at the expense of the novel’s story. Deep Autumn Heat was a delicious, easy read. Despite trying to create tension with a few nefarious sub-plots, it was light, predictable, and not particularly challenging. However, I’m confident this will only get better, the more Elisabeth Barrett writes. I am looking forward to reading the next installment, Blaze of Winter, which will be the story of Theo, Seb’s twin.

Blog Tour: Making Sense, Book #2 Sensual Healing Series (by Serenity Woods)

Thanks for having me on your blog! - Serenity

Making Sense from Samhain Publishing is a sexy contemporary romance, and the second in my Sensual Healing series. I chose the ‘one-night stand turns to more’ theme because both characters have huge issues they have to deal with in their lives before they can think of settling down, and yet they still feel the need for sex and comfort that they believe they can satisfy with one night’s passion. Of course one night is never enough, and they soon find they can’t bear to be apart.

Both characters are healers—Freya is a nurse, and Nate has the psychic ability to heal by the laying-on of hands. All the heroes in my Sensual Healing series have an unusual talent, because although they are very much contemporary romances first and foremost, I like a little supernatural twist to my stories. Having the traditional nurse and the very untraditional healer was a great way to explore the nature of healing in the modern world, and Freya is able to help Nate understand the true nature of healing, while he teaches her that not everything can be explained by science.

Nate’s past definitely haunts him the most. A traumatic event several years ago forced him to leave home, and he has to make peace with his father before he can truly move forward and find love and a future with Freya.

The book has many serious issues and a dark thread running through it, but it’s also filled with fun and laughter, and many sizzling sexy scenes! Here’s a little snippet to whet your appetite.

Excerpt
Freya nibbled her bottom lip, seeing his gaze drop there again. He leaned on the worktop, holding the edge with his hands, and he didn’t move toward her, but neither did he move away. He glanced over to the living room, and she checked over her shoulder, but there was no sign of Grace or Ash. She looked back, and now he was smiling openly, the naughty twinkle back in his eyes.
She put her hands behind her back, moved forward until her breasts just scraped his chest, and tipped her head slightly to the right. She leaned forward and brushed her lips against his, teasing him, pulled back and gave him a brief, suggestive look, and tipped her head to the left.
Then she kissed him.
Still he didn’t move as she pressed her lips gently against his, but she didn’t let his lack of movement put her off. She could sense his need to be comforted, his longing to be consoled. She kissed him slowly, taking her time, enjoying the warmth of the sun, the slight tang of brandy on his lips. Bringing up her hand, she let it rest on his cheek. She brushed her thumb against the slight stubble, kissing along his cheekbone, up to his eyes. She placed her lips on his closed eyelids, then kissed down his nose and back to his mouth, listening to him sigh softly as she did so. She scraped her teeth lightly on his bottom lip and ran her tongue across it.
He inhaled, and she pulled back a little, letting her lips graze his, glancing up at him. For a moment, she waited to see what he’d do, wondering whether he’d say something or move away.
But he didn’t.
His eyes met hers, his pupils dilating, and then he gave a short laugh of surrender before he wrapped his arms around her and lowered his lips to hers.Freya’s mouth curved beneath his, and she slid her arms around his neck, pressing herself fully along him. He kissed her soundly, but languidly, taking the time to taste her, and a deep shiver ran through her at the sensual slide of his tongue on hers. As she slipped a hand into his hair, he moved his hands down her back to her hips, and then lowered them to cup her ass. He tightened his hands on it, lifting her slightly, nestling his erection into her softness. As she inhaled with pleasure, he moved his hips, pushing against her, arousing her, and a warm ache grew between her legs. Her nipples tightened, heat pooling in her stomach, and he obviously felt something similar, because he gave a low growl of appreciation in his throat, deepening the kiss and making her sigh with longing.
“Whoa!”
They broke apart hurriedly as someone spoke behind them, and Freya turned to see Jodi—Ash’s fourteen-year-old daughter—watching them with wide, amused eyes.
“Yowza,” said Jodi. “I’ve never seen a guy kiss a girl like that except in the movies.”
“Hey, she kissed me,” said Nate, brushing the back of his hand across his mouth and wiping off Freya’s lip gloss before tucking his hands in his pockets. “I’m just an innocent bystander.”
Jodi grinned. “Yeah. You looked like you hated it.”
Nate laughed, glancing at Freya, whose face burned.
“I didn’t know you two had hooked up,” Jodi said, interested.
“We haven’t,” said Freya, worried Jodi would overreact and make Nate panic. “I was cheering him up. We’re just good friends.”
“Oh my God, if a friend ever cheered me up like that, I’d explode.
I nearly did, Freya thought.

Third Time's a Charm, Holland Springs Series #2 (by Marquita Valentine)

Amazon - B&N
Third Time's a Charm rating:  3.75 out of 5 stars
Release Date:  September 7, 2012
Holland Springs series rating:  3.5 out of 5 stars

"Third Time's a Charm" is the second novel in the Holland Springs series
and can be read as a stand alone novel

How are the sex scenes?
loved them.  There aren't so many that the sex is distracting and this isn't an erotic romance, but the hero has nipple piercings and he and the heroine have a long burn before giving in to temptation.

How are the story lines?
Enjoyed them greatly.  It was easy for me to keep up
and I was very interested in the plot with the hero and his mother.

Would you read it again?
The hero has nipple rings.  YES.

Back of the Book

Not even Holland Springs' Most Notorious Resident
can stop this Love Spell.
Customers come to Rose Holland’s apothecary shop for three things: to hear her uncanny matchmaking advice, to buy the “magical” hair and skin products she sells, and to accuse her of trying to steal their men. For years Rose has been entirely innocent and almost content with that status quo. But that was before sexy, smooth-talking Sasha Romanov came to town and made her want to use her love potions on him… until he broke her heart. Now corrupt town officials want to seize her land and sell it to an industrial giant, and her only hope for help looks like the one man she can’t trust—or stop herself from falling under his spell.

Alexander “Sasha” Romanov seems like every woman’s dream: charming, handsome and fabulously rich. But while the people of Holland Springs think he’s in town to generously invest in their economy (and possibly one of their daughters), Sasha struggles to save his sick mother from his vicious uncle’s plans by doing everything the greedy businessman wants. And Vlad Romanov wants Rose Holland’s land—at any cost.

Despite Sasha’s vow to get the job done and keep his hands (and everything else!) off Rose, the blue-eyed witch enchants him. But his mother’s life remains in the balance. Sasha must find a way to protect his mother, sabotage his uncle’s plans, and win the woman who’s captured his heart without destroying everything she loves.

Review

Hero Sasha Romanov and heroine Rose Holland have chemistry.  Yet it never gets too far, because their relationship is...unpleasant.
"Possibly she was mulling over how to best kill him."
Sasha is that kind of guy.  Good looking, fashionable and all together someone Rose does not trust.

Sasha's returned and Rose is furious with her little sister for renting a room in their home to him.  Naturally, this intimate proximity sets the stage for close calls, sexy sneak peeks and plenty of nighttime - and nightclothes - scenes.

For all of Rose's wariness, it seems she overcomes it rather quickly.  She's upset Sasha lives in her home and is uncomfortable with her lust for him...but he babysits Ivy and now Rose is won over because she gets to take a nap?  This is no doubt a huge gesture, but it takes only one to win her trust.

33% through the story Dr. LA (from Twice Tempted) shows up and starts talking about a girl named Lily.  This caught me off guard and doesn't seem to fit because Dr. LA and Lily are not mentioned at any other point in the story.

With the exception of Dr. LA's sudden appearance - all other cameos are a wonderful addition.  To tell you who pops in would be a spoiler, but towards the end when **** walks into Rose's office I about died.  It. Is. FABULOUS.
Something else that's fabulous is Marquita Valentine's way with words.  She writes very quotable novels:
"...she carefully placed [the dress] into the back of the closet, where it couldn't mock her."
"Well, I am a Holland, and we aim to please the men around here."
Gabriel (Twice Tempted's heroine's ex-fiance) is in this novel and his gentlemanly actions made me like him even more.  He's going to be such a great hero (hopefully) one day.

Those who read Twice Tempted know Sasha has an eye for fashion and Third Time's a Charm explains a lot when we find out the reason why.

The characters are defined, the pacing is easy to run with and the story lines intertwine while pushing along Sasha and Rose's relationship.  I do wish the paranormal element was resolved and explained.  Valentine may have intentionally left it open, but the story never specified.

And Sasha.  I thought about Sasha for days after reading this novel.  He is, quite simply, unforgettable.

GOOD job, Marquita.

A Small Town Girl…

But when Ryan Christensen unexpectedly bursts through the front door of her pub, she can’t help but be drawn in by his humor, charm, and undeniable good looks. At six foot two, with dirty blond hair, blue eyes, and an incredible body, Ryan has every girl in Seaport swooning. But Taryn isn’t every other girl.

Review

Love Unscripted by Tina Reber is a contemporary romance set in modern day Rhode Island.

It is a sensual, funny, heartfelt and captivating story. In reading the book's description, you are aware that there will be an improbable romance between heroine Taryn Mitchell, our untrusting yet passionate Bar Owner, and hero Ryan Christiansen, the devilishly handsome, talented Actor, who is thankfully, much more than just a pretty face.

The story is told from Taryn's perspective. As it is a long book, readers became very familiar with Taryn’s painful history of dating, her deep fear of rejection, and her hesitant yet developing desire to become a part of Ryan's life, despite the incredible forces against them.

Both Taryn and Ryan have extremely good reasons to be wary of entering a relationship with each other. The story is a slow dance between two vulnerable people with deep insecurities, both however, with a desire for forevermore.

This comment, "We are drawn to each other with a deep magnetism that reached all the way to the core of my being," reflects their longing for connection.

Tina Reber wove an intelligently developed romance that holds up well against the fairy-tale impulses attempted by lessor authors. Love Unscripted has beautiful pacing, strong, intelligent characters, believable plots, terrific humor and sultry romance.

Some authors feel the necessity to have their characters jettison their sizzling attraction of lust into sex within the first chapter or two of their books. At times, we mere readers thoroughly enjoy that!!!

However, It is refreshing to read a story where time is taken before the first bedroom scene. (Not to say that there aren't a few sizzling scenes prior to get readers’ heart rate soaring!) Then once the bedroom scene arrives...well, sensational!

I loved it. It's simply one of the best romances I've read in some time. It will capture and hold your attention to the very end. The length is exactly right for the story, and it is a pleasure to spend that amount of time with each character, despite the angst this causes.

You will fall in love with the generous and loving Ryan, empathize with the selfless and thoughtful Taryn; laugh and cry, and become engrossed in what seems at times as 'Mission Impossible'.

Author Guest Post: Cari Quinn on her novel "No Flowers Required" - Destination Sex?

Comment below for Cari's book giveaway!

Release Date:  August 23, 2012
"No Flowers Required" is book two in Cari Quinn's Love Required series

Destination sex?

Thank you so much to Ravishing Romances for having me here today! J

I know, I know, with a topic header like that, where can I go next? But this is a phrase I’ve coined lately, mainly because the books I’ve been writing for Entangled Publishing’s fab Brazen line seem to include a lot of sex that occurs anywhere but in a bed.

I didn’t plan that. Sex in a bed works for author me as much as the next gal, but it’s been fun exploring all the *other* places a couple can get busy.
Rooftop in the rain?
Check. Love scene #1 in NO FLOWERS REQUIRED.
Couch in heroine’s living room?
Check. Love scene #2.
Backyard shenanigans in the yard of a rehabbed house? Check. Love scene #3.

Heck, there’s even a partial scene at Alexa’s shop! But not a single bed to be found. Okay, so Alexa doesn’t even own a bed at the moment, just an air mattress, but still you see what I mean.

Though I’d say maybe NO FLOWERS REQUIRED was just a one-time-thing, it’s clearly not.

NO ROMANCE REQUIRED, the next book in the series, is looking much the same way sex-wise. I’m about to work on the 3rd sex scene and the destinations in THIS book are even more wild than in NFR!

I guess I’m bed-phobic…or my characters are, the naughty minxes.

And I’m not about to rein them in anytime soon! J

Giveaway time!
What wild destination rings your bells?
Not for sex, necessarily, though this is a judgment-free zone!
But where would you go on the most amazing vacation of your life if money was no object?

I’ll pick one winner next weekend to win their choice of ebook format of NO DRESS REQUIRED, book 1 in the Love Required series from Entangled Publishing! - Cari

Back of the Book
Flower shop owner Alexa Conroy had it all before the recession hit and her customers fled to cheaper shopping grounds. Desperate to make ends meet, she sells her dream home and moves into the rundown apartments above her shop. When she spots six feet of sexy distraction—complete with muscles, piercings, and tattoos—ripping up flooring, Alexa knows the karmic windfall she’s due just landed on her doorstep.
And the attraction’s definitely not one-sided.
Dillon James, reluctant heir to the corporation about to foreclose on Alexa’s shop, is not about to jeopardize their scorching chemistry by admitting he’s not the building’s handyman. But with only weeks until her business goes under and his identity is revealed, Dillon must find a way to convince Alexa cooperation isn’t a dirty word, help her save the shop from his brother’s greed, and persuade her that he’s not the enemy…or risk losing the only woman who’s seen the real him.
